Ministry of Public Health celebrates Diabetes World Day to raise Public Awareness to prevent Diabetes
As part of its mandate, the Ministry of Public Health wants to increase public awareness by celebrating Globally recognized health events. According to a survey recently conducted by International Diabetes Foundation (IDF), Afghanistan has about 917300 cases of diabetes, 501,500 are men and 415800 are women. Since the start of Diabetes Control Program activities,in Inbn Sina, Wazir Akbar Khan, Maywand a provincial hospitals in Heart, 24755 cases of diabetes type I and type II have been detected said Dr. SMA Fatimie the Minister of Public Health.

According to studies annually around 70,000 under 15 year old children develop Diabetes type I, across the world. In the past two decades Diabetes cases have been increasing rapidly. In 1985 number of Diabetic cases was 30 million across the world while in 2000 this number went up to 177 million. Some estimates suggest that the figure of Diabetes will be increased to 360 million till 2030.

14 November is designated for the celebration of Global Diabetes Day (GDD). This day is celebrated throughout of the world to increase public awareness. The GDD for the first time was introduced by International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and World Health Organization (WHO) in response to ever-increasing Diabetic cases and then through United Nations system it was officially recognized as a Diabetes Day. In Afghanistan GDD is celebrated for the first time across the country.

In 2009 the GDD is celebrated with below themes:

1. Know the diabetes risks and know the warning signs

2. Know how to respond to diabetes and whom to turn to

3. Know how to manage diabetes and take control
