Cabinet hails the successful implementation of Polio Eradication Program
The Polio Eradication program of Afghanistan was presented by Dr. S.M. Amin Fatimie, Minister of Public Health of Afghanistan at the cabinet meeting on Monday August 4, 2008.

The cabinet members became very much interested by learning about the importance of polio eradication program and the nature of the National Immunization Days (NIDs) which mobilizes thousands of health professionals and volunteers in all villages of Afghanistan, said Dr. S.M. Amin Fatimie, Minister of Public Health of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The cabinet recognized the Program as a national priority and reaffirmed its firm resolve in supporting the Program . His Excellency Ahmad Zia Masoud, acting President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and the entire cabinet members requested ministries of Haj and Religious Affairs, Education, Information and Culture, Higher Education, Border Affairs and Independent Directorate of Local Administrations to provide every possible support to the Ministry of Public Health at national, provincial and district level for enabling the volunteers to reach every child in every household to get them vaccinated during each round of NIDs he added.

Governors of the Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan, Farah and Nangarhar along with the ministers of Public Health, Haj and Religious Affairs, Education, Information and Culture, Higher Education, Border Affairs and director of the Independent Directorate of Local Administrations will be soon summoned by His Excellency Hamed Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to discuss ways for reaching all children in the mentioned provinces and getting them vaccinated against polio. The 13 confirmed polio cases, as of August 2008, have been reported from the above insecure provinces of Afghanistan.

r. Fatmie officially inaugurated a three day NIDs here in Kabul on Saturday August 2, 2008. This round of NIDs started on August 3, 2008 and successfully finished on August 5, 2008. MoPH with the technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) and financial support from the USAID, the World Bank, Rotary International, European Union, CIDA, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI Alliance), Government of Japan and JICA conducted the NIDs. In this round of campaign 52,323 staff of MoPH and volunteers will be providing vaccination to 7.5 million children of less than 5 years with a total cost of $4 million. MoPH Afghanistan is indebted to all health stakeholders and donors.
