27 Gen Xpert Devices Donated to the Ministry of Public Health

Kabul, July 9, 2018. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) donated 27 Gen Xpert devices at a total cost of $ 1,755,000 to the Ministry of Public Health.

This machine is the most advanced medical device for the immediate detection of TB, which can detect germs in less than two hours.

Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz, the Minister of Public Health, thanked the United States Agency for International Department (USAID) for the donation of the device and said, “Reducing TB in the country is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Public Health and using advanced devices that is able to quickly diagnose TB cases will help us to reach our goals for controlling TB in the country”.

Dr. Feroz added that the Ministry of Public Health, in collaboration with its health partners has been able to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis cases from 18,000 to 11,000 last year, and currently there are 2355 TB diagnostic and treatment centers throughout the country.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious problem for the health sector, and Afghanistan is among the countries that still have the highest cases of TB in the Eastern Mediterranean region and every year, an estimated 33 per cent of the people lose their lives. It is noteworthy that there are 189 new cases of TB in each of the hundreds of thousands, and 55.8 percent of those suffering from TB are women in Afghanistan. 

Mr. Herbie Smith, The representative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), expressed his satisfaction over the efforts of the Ministry of Public Health to reduce TB cases in Afghanistan, and emphasized that using Gen Xpert device can quickly detect TB cases.

The Ministry of Public Health, in cooperation with the National Tobacco Control Program, has been able to discover 406, 47 TB cases over the past year, which is a major achievement in this regard.
