Ministry of Public Health Technical Team Discusses Health Sector Priorities and Ongoing Cooperation with European Union Delegation in Afghanistan
During the meeting, both sides reviewed ongoing cooperation and discussed strategic priorities for Afghanistan’s health sector, including non-communicable diseases, cancer, mental health, substance use, maternal and child health, nutrition, WASH, procurement challenges, disease preparedness, and strengthening pharmaceutical regulation to meet international standards, including GMP.
Both sides also emphasized that instead of relying on imported medicines, domestic pharmaceutical production should be strengthened to ensure national health security.
The EU expressed support and stated its readiness to assist in professional training for health workers—especially maternity, physiotherapists, and other specialists—and in creating job opportunities for youth.
The European Union reaffirmed its long-term commitment to Afghanistan’s health system, providing around $100 million in development funding and an additional $60–70 million in humanitarian health aid.
Both sides pledged to continue cooperating to strengthen Afghanistan’s health system, ensure sustainable funding, and align with the national health strategy.
