Background:

The Ministry of Public Health is committed to providing high quality healthcare services to Afghans. Considering the increasing incidence of various types of cancers among Afghans and non-existence of a comprehensive cancer centre, MoPH decided to deliver cancer healthcare services to cancer patients through establishing a cancer department. Based on WHO estimates, nearly 20,000 Afghans suffer from various types of cancers each year while more than 15,000 die every year. The most common types of cancers are that of breast, oesophagus, stomach, lip/oral, cervix, and lung.

The newly established 25-bed cancer department currently located on the 9th floor of Jumhuriat hospital has surgical and medical oncology units providing diagnostic, therapeutic, and palliative care services for cancer patients. In addition, it has an outpatient department (OPD) unit which has 10 consultation rooms.

Between 70 and 100 patients visit the outpatient department each day. The patients include those who are already diagnosed with cancer in in other centres and are mainly under chemotherapeutic treatment. In addition, some patients visit the department with advanced stage of their disease which require palliative care.

Purpose of Assignment

The objective of the assignment is to provide diagnosis, treatment and palliative care services to cancer patients at the cancer department. In addition, the medical oncologist is responsible for training of Afghan doctors working in the department.

Job Summary

The Medical Oncologist is responsible for providing diagnostic, treatment, and palliative care services to cancer patients at the newly established cancer department. In the OPD, she/he will be providing consultation to patients visiting the department including ordering various types of exams/tests and prescribing medicine. Moreover, she/he will be in charge of Day Care Unit where patients usually go under chemotherapy.

Responsibilities: Principal Duties and Tasks

  1. Lead Medical Oncology services (OPD and IPD)
  2. Manage OPD and IPD patients assessment
  3. Provide treatment to cancer patients
  4. Provide palliative care to cancer patients
  5. Identify and manage side effect symptoms from therapy
  6. Manage acutely unwell oncology patients, both treatment and disease complications.
  7. Provide medical oncology input to gynaecological and surgical oncology cancer units/patients
  8. Lead the morning reports and rounds in the Inpatient Department
  9. Be responsible consultant for inpatient care of medical oncology patients
  10. Assist with development of medical oncology curriculum
  11. Assist with development of medical oncology  training program
  12. Responsible for the training and supervision for all junior medical staff
  13. Assigning junior doctors to various clinical and academic tasks
  14. Undertake continuous medical education (CME)  under the auspices of the Fellow of American College of Physicians and/or Royal College of physicians
  15. Should be willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team, whenever required.
  16. Assist with development of national cancer control strategy
  17. Other duties and responsibilities relevant to the position as assigned by the director/manager

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 year experience in Oncology and pain management
  • Internal Medical Spiciest or equivalent from a recognized Hospital
  • MD or equivalent from a recognized college/institute
  • Specialist in use of medications such as chemotherapeutic drugs, hormones monoclonal antibodies as well cancer analysis and pain management
